When I began the Woman Project, my first idea was the most comprehensive in terms of a cohesive concept.

The WOMAN • MOVIE STAR • ICON set was intended to create a project consisting of 20 sitters, with each being shown in the three headings of the title. Woman was a very straight forward head shot. Movie Star was to be the person presenting themselves in a glamorous and well Movie Star like aspect. The third was Icon, where we each collaborated to discover in depth, how the person saw themselves, ideally or otherwise.

Suzanne Freeman-Bethune

The very first one to work with me was my lovely and dear friend Suzanne who helped me solidify the concept. Sadly she left Greece for the UK before we could finish her set, and so ended up not even being included in the final set, much to my disappointment. Below are a few of my favourites with her. We shot many more images that I would love to show at some point, but for now these may cover the loss of her full presence.

Alexandra Charitonova

Alexandra was someone, as many others in the set, I came across in the wonderland that was Facebook then, before it became a tool of evil. I wrote her a message and proposed the idea of meeting to discuss the project. She kindly agreed and we met over a coffee and she, as it turned out, liked the idea.

For location I asked the mother of a photographer friend to borrow her apartment and we shot the set below there. Sadly once more, after this shoot we lost contact, I cannot remember why. Suffice to say we never did the follow up shoots. So here is a small sample of the shoot we did mange to do.

Bemi Pertos

Bemi is another of the Facebook contacts. I saw her pictures on another candidates profile, and immediately asked if she would be interested in working with me. Fortunately, though she is a naturally shy person, she agreed. We did a shoot at my house, and then somehow never managed to do another. Again I cannot recall why not.

She is now a mother and getting on with much more important things in her life, so I can not see after ten years that have elapsed there’s much chance of us finishing this. No matter, after all that first series is now long over anyway. She was a lovely model to work and an exceptionally lovely person.
