“Left Behind” | A Continuing Project
I have, of course, mentioned my long standing tradition of PhotoWalks with my wife, Cassi, exploring and recording Athens, our city of residence since 1994.
I have been recording more and more items, often toys, lost or left behind in the various streets, parks and wild areas of the city.
Looking through this extensive and growing series I noticed a few shots that showed incongruous abandoned objects, sometimes sad, others just plain weird, and it struck me that this is a whole study in itself.
We live in possibly the most wasteful period in the whole history of humanity. In fact we in the West are the most capitalistic, consumption obsessed population ever. So it is not surprising that we are also the most wantonly wasteful and arrogant people that have lived on this planet. We buy and discard at an amazing rate.
Things I’ve seen in my walks with my wife Cassi over the many years we’ve been shooting the PhotoWalks together, would raise your hairs on end. Perfectly functional items from little toys all the way to furniture and of course endless articles of clothing are deleted from peoples life as if the end of the world is nigh and we may as well squander.
Aside from the insane environmental consequence of this attitude, there is also the political, social and perhaps moral significance of this deleterious practice.
Anyway this page is basically going to remain active while I occasionally add more and more to it. I have shot these mostly on the Nikon D750, but some were shot on my Samsung Galaxy when simply out for other reasons than shooting.
