Another set from the project “Photowalks with Cassi“, once again at the magnificent Antonis Tritsi Park & Nature Reserve.
Same set as before (here) but this time in my, by now, time honoured black & white. There are those who say digital B&W can never match the analogue. To a great extent that is true. It is true that in film you could choose your speed therefore your grain quality and the exposure range. I used to usually shoot my b&w on Illford PanF, a 50 ASA film which I would normally shoot at 25 ASA and then develop it in a high acutance developer such as Ilford Perceptol, at a 1/7+ ratio and slow down my development time to get as much as I could out of the amazing sharpness and contrast range of it. Also I was one of the people that basically revived fibre based papers in my college; where everyone was using multigrade plastic papers; and worked exclusively on Agfa Record Rapid Baryta fibre based papers, with their beautiful warm tones and massive contrast range. My favourite was Grade 3 which gave me a good balance of high contrast and great shadow and highlight tolerance. In this set you could say I am trying to emulate that feel. I don’t totally agree that you cannot do great b&w work in digital photography. I guess it just depends on what you expect to put into it.
Shot on the Nikon D700, Nikkor 35mm ƒ/2 at ISO 320 (mostly).
